Ngaa - Here

Many - Connections

Ngahere: the mutually beneficial and interwoven relationships across te taiao that sustain whakapapa, mauri, and the diversity of life.

The purpose of this guide is to set down values and guiding principles, as expressed by mana whenua, in the delivery of community aspirations for ngahere across Ngaa Hau o Maangere. The guide responds to requests for assistance with restoration guidance and was developed for use in Nga Hau o Maangere.

If we are to increase community understanding and appreciation, foster a love of nature and give the community tools to make decisions and implement programmes, then this guide adds to the toolbox of existing knowledge to honour both maatauranga Maaori and the collective knowledge within communities.

This guide aims to assist the reader to step through a process of decision making for selecting the right tree for the right place to improve the rate of success.

The Maangere Ngahere Working Group produced the guide and is a collaboration between:

  • Mana whenua - Te Ahiwaru and Te Aakitai Waiohua

  • Kāinga Ora

  • ME Family Services (local community organisation)

  • Uru Whakaaro
